The 122nd Fw traces it's history back to the 358th Fighter Group that was activated in January 1943. Flying P-47 Thunderbolts, their primary mission was bomber escort but as the Allies advanced, their role shifted to ground support and 'tank busting'.
The 122nd Fighter Wing currently operates a full squadron of A-10C Thunderbolt II aircraft. The 'Blacksnakes' of the 163rd Fighter Squadron are based out of the Fort Wane Air National Guard (ANG) Base in Fort Wayne, IN.
To commemorate 100 Years of Aviation in the Indiana Air National Guard, the Ang Paint Facility in Sioux City, Iowa painted one aircraft in a black/gray scheme with a large '100' on both engine nacelles. The colors of the scheme follow the same pattern as the tradi
