Both aircraft were single-seat, all-metal monoplanes powered by two WP-6 (a licence-built Mikulin RD-9B) turbojets and were designed for interception, close air support and limited fighter-bomber roles. The J-6A mounted two cannons and could carry IR-homing anti-aircraft missiles, while the J-6B only carried similar missiles, rocket pods or bombs. Following the initial manufacturing problems in China, the production was later resumed (J-6As in 1961 and J-6Bs in 1974) and both types
